Telenor Introduces Tiered SMS Pricing in Norway and Denmark - What Does This Mean for You?
If you work with SMS, you may have heard about Telenor’s latest initiative in Norway and Denmark. As of January 1, 2025, Telenor Norway introduced a tiered pricing structure that particularly affected international Sender IDs. Shortly after, Telenor announced that they would introduce a similar model as of March 11, 2025 in Denmark.
Before we start, it’s worth taking some time to get two things straight. Firstly, the changes only apply to the Telenor network, so they do not affect Telia and Ice in Norway or TDC, Telia and 3 in Denmark. Secondly, the price changes apply to SMS traffic sent from organizations and companies to Norwegian and Danish recipients connected to Telenor’s network.
Telenor is the first operator in the Nordics to implement a tiered pricing structure, but it may not be the last time we see such initiatives. Other operators may choose to follow suit in the near future. It is currently too early to tell though.
So what do Telenor’s changes mean for you as a GatewayAPI user? Let’s dive into the details.
Overview of price changes in Norway
Here’s a quick overview of what the changes will look like on Telenor Norway’s network from 2025:
Category | Price change |
Alphanumeric Sender IDs | No change |
Norwegian numbers that are exempt | No change |
Norwegian numeric Sender IDs | Small increase ↑ |
International numeric Sender IDs | Large increase ↑ |
Alphanumeric Sender IDs can be any combination of numeric and alphabetic characters (0-9, a-z, A-Z, _) with a maximum length of 11 characters. Numeric Sender IDs consist of numbers only and can contain up to 15 digits.
Numbers that are exempt include 5944xxxx, 5958xxxx and 41716xxx, among others. These number ranges are often associated with call centers or larger businesses and are therefore not affected by the extra charges. For more information, check out our country restrictions module.
Overview of price changes in Denmark
For Danish users, similar pricing structures will be introduced on March 11, 2025. This means that SMS messages to Telenor Denmark with international numeric Sender IDs will also increase significantly. However, compared to Norway, Denmark only distinguishes between whether it is a Danish Sender ID or an international one, and not whether there are numeric or alphanumeric Sender IDs.
Category | Price change |
Danish Sender IDs | No change |
International numeric Sender IDs | Large increase ↑ |
